Back to navigation metaphors, one year we moored our sailboat in a little marina just north of the Middle Arm of the Fraser river in British Columbia. Full of anticipation for an exhilarating day sail we prepared the boat, and started the motor and cast off the lines. I gave a little reverse thrust and nothing seemed to happen. That is strange. Why are we not moving? So, we looked around to make sure there were no stray lines holding us back and gave maximum reverse thrust. NADA!
Well, it was low tide and apparently our sailboat had settled into a nice bed of mud. No matter what we did we could not get her to move until the tide came and lifted her out of the mud. She was stuck. No day sail for us!
Getting stuck is a common problem with many people. The insecurities surrounding complex issues sometimes requires an extra push or lift to get out of the mud. In our case, we had to get the marina tug to come in and flush out all the mud that had accumulated over the winter. The Little tug pulled in to our slip, tied up and started flushing out everything around it using its powerful thrusting props. We never had a problem with low water again that year.
I found myself stuck recently over a conundrum with my schedule and multiple exigencies on my time. I brought this to my coach and we worked at it for a while, and finally, I realized what the problem was. I was stuck in the mud of unclarified demands on my time. I determined how to fix this, thanked my coach, and after the call I got to work and straightened it out.
Now, unstuck I can enjoy the ocean breezes and get on with my plans. Clear sailing!
What about you? Are you stuck in the mud? Are you waiting for the tide to rise, or can you do something about it now?
